This week Kenya Education Fund had the class of 2022 CREW (Career readiness, reproductive health and Entrepreneurship workshop) at the Contemplative retreat center in Karen. This workshop is custom made for students that just completed high school to help them with the transition to higher learning institutions and adulthood.
CREW impacts soft skills in the attendees that will help them in whichever route they take in life. Since KEF began having the workshops, our transition rate into institutions of higher learning has been 98%. It was a vibrant workshop and all the students were awarded a one year scholarship to help them join and settle in college/university.
Starting this year, KEF will be opening up the workshop for students outside the KEF scholarship who wish to join the workshop where slots are available.
We had the following sessions done by various professionals. Communication skills was done by KEF Alumni Ms. Hilda Chebet who is now an editorial assistant. She believes that communication is a foundation of success, self-awareness was carried out by counselling psychologist and mediator Ms. Pascalia who emphasized that self-awareness can allow them to deal with trauma and grow.
CV Writing and interviewing skills was done by trade policy analyst Mr. Davilyne Busuru who emphasized on capitalizing on our skills and custom making our cv’s for the position.
Effective communication was done by our in-house communication department and built on what has been taught during the life skills workshops that they attend when in form one and three.
Work Ethics and negotiation skills was taught by Dr. Gift Mtukwa a lecturer at Africa Nazarene University who is a long time KEF partner, emphasized that Kenya needs more ethical leaders and it begins this young.
Drug abuse was done by Mr. Antony Njoroge a drug recovery counsellor at Cornerstone rehabilitation. He gave so much information and cautioned on drug usage. This was a very moving session as drug abuse heavily affects the youth.
Reproductive health was done by KEF alumni and health practitioner Nurse Winnie Okello who preached safe sexual habits and educated of how STI’s are spread. This was a very engaging session with our students asking their questions in a safe and judgment free environment.

Civics and governance was done by Mr. Gerald Walterfang founder and director at WDS Africa who is a long time KEF partner. He strongly advocated about civic duty and responsibilities because it is our obligation and necessary commitment to a functioning society.
