Firebrand blogger Cyprian Nyakundi may be forced to pay a fine of Sh 300,000 or risk spending four months in jail for contempt of court.
High court judge Lucy Njuguna gave the ruling after it emerged that the blogger failed to appear in court for a mention of a case in which Safaricom chief executive officer Bob Collymore had sued for defamation.
Contempt of court is seen as lack of respect for the court.
While reading the verdict, justice Njuguna noted that Nyakundi had not given them any reason for missing the proceedings.
“The court will not condone deliberate disobedience of its orders and will not shy away from dealing firmly with its proved contemnors,” Justice Njuguna said.
Nyakundi has been publishing demaging exposes detailing how Safaricom is conniving with certain individuals including Collymore to swindle subscribers. This prompted Collymore to file the lawsuit against the blogger.
The court later issued a directive stopping further publication of such materials.
